Pneumonia!!!!

Last night while I was at work, I got a phone call from my hubby. Now he only calls if there is an emergency, and he knows not to call after 5 as I am almost always unavailable from 5-6. Well yesterday he called around 5:15. I answered the phone and he asked if there was any way I could come home because Jacob was crying, sounding like he was having trouble breathing and he was almost throwing up too and Bill didn't know what to do. So I called my boss, asked her to come back in to work (she lives 2 minutes away). As soon as she got there I came home.

I took Jacob's temperature and it was 102. I asked Bill to take Jacob to Urgent Care because of his fever, that it came on suddenly and the fact that he was breathing weird. I stayed home with Benjamin and Rebecca. I also asked him to take the car, so I could have the van just in case. (Jacob had a runny nose and an occasional cough earlier that day but his energy level was high and he was playing and running around like he normally does).

Well after half an hour, Bill called to say that they were sending him to the ER to get a chest x-ray due to the breathing and because Jacob's temp was 104. I asked him if he wanted me to come and he said not right then. About an hour later he texted that they had just taken blood and that they were still waiting for the xray. I told him I was getting a babysitter then I would be there.

I again called my boss, who is also a very, very good friend and Benjamin's godmother and asked her to come sit with Ben and Rebecca. She graciously was over in less than 5 minutes (she lives a block away). I headed over the ER. Jacob started crying when I came in.

They had given him motrin for his fever, and they took a strep test and a flu test. Shortly thereafter they came to take him to do the chest x-ray. When they got the results of the chest x-ray, they found out that he had developed pneumonia in one of his lungs...so they started him on an IV antibiotic, an IV steroid, they gave him oxygen and had given him 2 breathing treatments. They was talk of transferring him to Children's hospital in Columbus if they couldn't get his oxygen levels to stay at 90. Thankfully with the antibiotic and steriod and breathing treatments, we were able to come home late last night.

Jacob was such a trouper...he didn't like having his blood drawn or the IV put in, and he HATED having the oxygen tube in but he was a real trooper and once I got in the hospital bed with him and allowed him to cuddle up next to me, he seemed to do much better.

We moved Jacob's mattress in next to our bed, and he slept fitfully last night. The good news is he doesn't seem to have a fever this morning. But he is not himself....he is laying around and just no energy. We have to keep a close eye on his breathing and make sure he doesn't get worse. Bill is getting his medicines filled as we speak. I pray that Jacob doesn't get worse....

Making Jack-o-lanterns

A few weeks ago, I let Rebecca and Jacob each pick a pumpkin at Aldi when then had them on sale of $1.99 each. The pumpkins were huge! I figured they would last until we could carve them to make jack-o-lanterns if we kept them inside....and they did.

Well Sunday was the day to make our pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns.

First off, Bill and I had to help the kids take all the guts and seeds out of the their pumpkins. Rebecca did help clean out her pumpkin, but Jacob wanted no part in it. He just kept saying it was yucky!

After they were all cleaned out, I helped Jacob draw his face on his pumpkin. He said he wanted a sad jack-o-lantern, with triangle eyes and a circle nose. Then I helped him cut his face out of the pumpkin.

Rebecca drew her own face on hers. Then Bill helped her cut hers out.

Later that night, we put them on the porch with candles inside and we officially have our 2013 jack-o-lanterns! I think they turned out pretty good!

Do you allow your kids to make jack-o-lanterns?
Do they do the work, or do you as parent do the work?

Happy Homemaker Monday

It is Monday again, which means that it’s "Happy Homemaker Monday," a project which is hosted by Sandra over at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom. Each week, she hosts "Happy Homemaker Monday" as a way to highlight what is going on in her world. This week I have decided to join in... So here is a little glimpse into my world on this Monday!

The Weather:::
Right now it is around 30 degrees. Nice and cold! But it is supposed to be sunny and around 55 today so I really can't complain.

Right now I am::: Typing this post up, thinking about the days plans. Jacob is sitting in the recliner watching cartoons; Benjamin is digging around in the toy bins and sliding toys all over the floor. Somewhat of a normal Monday morning at our house.

Thinking:::that I have a lot that I want to do, but not sure if I have time. That the laundry should be done in the washer so I need to go flip that.

On my reading pile:::
The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks
Every Day a Friday by Joel Osteen

On my TV::: On Saturday night, Bill and I started watching DVRed episodes of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and now I am addicted. It is a really good show. I don't like shows with a lot of murder and grossness, and this does not have that at all so it is good for me. Bill teases me that there is actually a network show now that I like! We have one more episode to watch then the new episode is on Tuesday night.

On the menu for this week:::Last night I made a mini Thanksgiving meal---Turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, gravy and crescent rolls with chocolate pudding and whipped cream for dessert. Tonight I think I will keep it simple and make tacos and spanish rice. And the rest of the week looks like this:

Monday: Tacos and Spanish rice
Tuesday: Chicken, potatoes and carrots in oven (new recipe)
Wednesday: Fish sticks, baked potato, peas, fruit
Thursday: Out to dinner (Wendy's) which is our post trick or treat tradition
Friday: Frozen Pizza and veggies
Saturday: ??????? Not sure yet ??????
Sunday: Lasagna (going to attempt to make this homemade)

On my to do list:::Laundry, Laundry, and more laundry
Catch up on my book reviews and schedule to post (I have 4 books that I have read to review, just need to review them!)
Fill out HEAP application and mail in
Figure out budget for November

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating::: Saturday I experimented with a couple of recipes and came up with a banana, pumpkin, chocolate chip muffins. I didn't care for them but the kids LOVED them.

Looking around the house:::There are toys everywhere...thanks to Benjamin...There is laundry downstairs to do, clean dishes that need to be put away in the kitchen, and breakfast dishes in the sink that need to go in the dishwasher.

From the camera:::

On my prayer list:::All people who are dealing with cancer in their lives. Those children whose parents don't make an effort to be a parent to them.

Bible verse, Devotional:::

" Cast all your anxieties on Him, for he cares about you." 1 Peter 5:7

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Volley for Life event

Last night, my daughter's school held a "Volley for Life" event to help raise money for our school's Relay for Life team. I am a part of our school's team and so I took the kids to the event to help raise money!

Basically, they held an exhibition of the 4th through 8th grade volleyball teams playing each other. There was also concessions, including cancer ribbon cookies, etc. Another member of our team, who makes and sells jewelry, was selling her bottlecap necklaces with cancer ribbons on them, with all proceeds going to our Relay for Life team.

Getting ready to head to work and show my support for the Volley for Life event

My brother (the kid in yellow in the middle of the picture) hitting the ball over the net!
His team (the 6th and 8th grade boys team) won the exhibition!

My dad and Rebecca taking in the volleyball action

Me and my youngest brother Josh, who played in the games with his team.

It was a fun night! Rebecca, Jacob and Benjamin had a blast and I was so happy to see that our school gym was packed! It was nice to be able to see my little brother play volleyball probably for the last time as a member of St. Vincent's team. And all for a good cause!  I don't know the total raised, but judging by the number of people there, I would say the night was a huge success!

Hubby's work situation

This week has been pretty stressful around our house. Hubby has been put in a work situation that is causing him a lot of stress and anxiety…and that is carrying over into our personal life. For those of you who don't know...Bill is the sports editor at the newspaper based in our town.

Basically he is convinced that his boss is out to have him fired. I will admit that when we have talked about his job and he has presented me with what has been going on at work, that I have to believe that what he says is true. Well yesterday Bill came home highly upset and anxious. He had another run in with his boss.

Finally, we had a talk and I told him that if he felt that he was being called to look for a different position then I would support his decision. I hope that I am doing the best that I can to support him but there are times that I don’t know that I am. I don’t know how I can support him….I just don’t know….

While I was at work, Bill texted me and told me that he was going to apply to different newspapers out of the area. I pray that whatever is meant to happen will…I don’t really want to move our family out of our area but if I have to, I will.

Just praying for some clarity....

If anyone knows that a newspaper in your area is hiring for a sports editor, please let me know....

Not sure how I feel about this...

Last night I got a phone call from my mom….she wanted to know if I knew that the OB/GYN that delivered Benjamin was no longer working at the office that I had been seeing her at. I said no, that was news to me. My mother was talking to another mom who happens to see this particular gynecologist and she said that when she went in for her appt on Monday that the receptionist had to reschedule her because the doc was no longer practicing with them. After some investigating, it seems that she was asked to leave the practice after a recent c-section where the patient almost bled out. There was a similar incident last year involving this doctor, where she “forgot” to stitch up a uterus during a c-section. This was all news to me.

When I got off the phone with my mother, I googled the doctor and a couple of interesting things came up. The hospitals website just said that she had moved her practice elsewhere and you could schedule with one of the other 3 OB/GYNs. Then I found a business address for her at a gynecology practice and a separate one for a cancer clinic. This has to be the same doctor as her first and last names are very uncommon. Just seems strange to me.

The more that I think about it, the more I feel lucky that I had no complications with my c-section with Benjamin. As I was telling my husband about this, he said maybe she had to be more careful with my c-section because I had a lot of scar tissue from my c-section with Jacob. I don't know. I am just thankful it was uncomplicated.

This doctor was also the doctor that found the bladder cancer on an ultrasound that she had ordered for my mother, when she was having some issues with bleeding. So I feel like she has helped my family.

I don’t know. I always felt comfortable with her, but maybe I shouldn’t have. I just am not sure what to think. I guess I hope that what my friend found out is just gossip and that the doctor just found a different practice closer to where she lived to practice. I had good experiences with her so I will just think on that, and not what others might or might not have gone through.

Enjoying the fall weather this past weekend...

Over the weekend I took advantage of the nice weather and took the kids outside to play while I cleaned out our van. The weather was cool, but not cold. The kids had a blast in the leaves!

Unfortunately that may be the last time we can play outside in just jackets. It is now cold, and they are calling for snow showers mixed in with rain the next couple of days. I am sure the snow won’t stick but still…I want some warmer temperatures back.

What is the weather like where you are?

Give Yourself a Raise by Gordon Bennett Bleil (review)

Give Yourself a Raise (front cover)

Give Yourself a Raise (back of book)

My thoughts:

Give Yourself a Raise by Gordon Bennett Bleil is a great basic financial advice book for everyone. This isn't necessarily a book for those who have millions of dollars, but it is perfect for the average Joe or Jane who just wants to have more money, less financial stress and more financial freedom in their budgets. And my thoughts are who doesn't?

I love how the book is set up into 2 parts...the first section being about what you can do to manage your money day to day. Bleil offers a financial freedom risk assessment quiz so that you can see where you are right now financially. He offers worksheets and graphs to show you how to make goals for your financial health and to forecast your financial future. He talks about managing your debt and getting your financial leaks under control.

The second section of the book, offers a greater understanding of the finance industry including government programs, credit scores, identity theft, and retirement and investing. I found this section to be informational in that it offered great explanations on a level that I could understand, rather than an explanation where you need a math masters degree to understand.

I liked Give Yourself a Raise. I feel that it is a great basic educational resource that I can use to help me take control of my family finances and hopefully make our finances a source of enjoyment rather than stress.

Disclaimer: I was sent this book from The Cadence Group in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are my own.

Looky what I got in the mail.....and a surprise dinner out....

I almost titled this post: "When being spontaneous pays off"

Take these two examples:

First up is a gift I received in the mail.

I don't always like getting the mail....especially when I am expecting bills or something like that. Well last week I had a surprise waiting for me when I opened our door to collect our mail for the day.
There was a priority mail box waiting for me on the front porch....

Inside was a bunch of stuff that I won from a blogging giveaway from Sluggy over at "DON'T READ THIS; IT'S BORING!!!!". I won one of her giveaways! I was super excited because most of the things in the box were items that our family uses! Here is what was in the box:

THANK YOU SLUGGY!!!! You made my day! :)

Secondly was something that happened yesterday:

Yesterday I got another surprise. Before going into work, I made a meat loaf and scalloped potatoes for dinner so that Bill could feed the boys before I came home. (I worked 2-6pm). Well, around 4:45 I get a text from Bill saying "Want to go to dinner w friends tonight?" Ummm...okay....

We are not normally let's drop everything and do things like this, as we have 3 kids and there is a process to getting things done.

Well long story short, one of the guys that works for Bill and his wife, wanted to treat Bill, the kids and I to dinner at a new Greek restaurant that just opened in our area. Bill originally wanted to just go with just him and I, but we could not get a babysitter at the last minute (although my hubby did try!)  so we ended up taking the kids too. It turned out to be a really nice evening. The food was great! The conversation was fun, and it was nice to go out with friends.

Sometimes it is nice to just throw caution to the wind and do things spontaneously as you never know. I didn't start reading Sluggy's blog until about 2 months ago so I wasn't even sure I would enter her contest, but I thought why not? I read it. I may not be an old reader, but I could still win and I did. I normally would say frown upon going out at the last minute, but instead I said we could have meatloaf tonight and we had a fun night out with friends.

What have you done spontaneously recently?

Jacob's 4th birthday party

This year for Jacob's 4th birthday, we decided to keep things very simple and just do cake and ice cream with the grandparents.

I will admit that I felt a little guilty not having a party per se, with lots of food and lots of guest, etc. It was definitely different than what we have done in the past.

But you know what, Jacob had a blast. I didn't have to stress the night before about how clean the house is, if all the food was ready to go, etc.

Instead, our party day looked like this:

Got up (late in fact...45 minutes before we had to leave for church)
Showered, got dressed for church
Fed the kids, got them dressed for church
Went to church
Let the kids play on the playground after church
Let Jacob pick where he wanted to get lunch at. He chose McDonald's to eat at home!

Had lunch and watched an Avengers cartoon we had rented for the kids the night before.
My parents came over.
Bill's parents came home.
Had cake and ice cream.

Jacob opened his presents.

We talked and laughed.
Grandparents went home and I did a very quick clean up of party dishes and then fixed dinner for the family.
While I was fixing dinner, Bill played with Jacob and Rebecca with Jacob's new superhero toys!

After dinner, I went snack shopping for work and then we relaxed as a family.
Got kids ready for bed and put in bed.

Overall it was a great, relaxing day! Jacob had a blast and that is what mattered and I didn't have to go grey worrying about perfection in the party. It was simple and fun!

Happy 4th birthday Jacob!

4 years ago Bill took me to the hospital because I was having some pains and being 37 weeks pregnant and having a high risk pregnancy meant that you went to the hospital. After leaving Rebecca with Bill's parents (who lived 10 minutes from the hospital), we went up to labor and delivery to be seen. It was around 8:30 at night. They did all kinds of tests and none seem to say that I was in labor. They thought maybe I was dehydrated, etc. Finally, the nurse talked to the doctor and he ordered one more test to be done before I could be released to go home. Well as soon as she did the test, I ended up going into active labor! I had to have an emergency c-section, as Jacob was breech and was in such a position that it would physically not be possible to deliver him naturally. I remember that we had to wait until 1am as I had eaten pancakes for dinner that night and we had to wait 8 hours since I ate before the surgery. I was scared to death! We decided not to tell anyone that Jacob was being born, instead calling Bill's parents and telling them that I was being kept overnight for observation. Early on October 11, 2009 Jacob William Davis entered the world, weighing 8lbs 10 oz.  and he was 21 inches long.

Today, he is an active, strong willed, stubborn 4 year old who captures my heart daily. In the past year, he has learned to be potty trained. He has learned to love slides and playing sports. And he is learning to be a great big brother! He is an amazing 4 year old and I love him dearly!

Happy 4th birthday Jacob! Mommy and Daddy, Gaga and Benjamin love you!

Chasin' Cheeky playdate with friends

This past weekend, we had some friends over to try out some games and for lunch. We invited Benjamin's Godparents over and their kids for some Sunday fun!

We had a simple lunch of hot dogs and chili...along with the new Cheetos Simply Natural White cheddar puffy puffs!

Everyone loved the puffs, especially Benjamin's Godfather, who ate 2 single size bags! He said they were delicious. I thought they were milder in flavor than I would have liked. The kids loved them. My friend, Amanda, said that she was happy that they didn't leave white residue all over her fingers. I might buy these again for the family, however they would be an occasional treat as they are a little more expensive than the regular Cheetos.

After lunch, we settled back to watch the kids play some games.

First up was "Chasin' Cheeky." The premise is that the rings are tossed around and the kids have to take the rings and put them on the monkey's tail as the monkey moves around. Whomever gets all three of their rings on and pulls the banana out of the monkey's mouth wins. The kids had fun with this game. I was disappointed in that only 2 could play at a time. I think it would be much more fun if 4 could play at a time.

Then the kids had fun playing the classics.... Hi Ho Cherry-O and Memory. These were newer versions and while they are classic games, the format has been changed. In Hi-Ho Cheery-O, only 3 people can play now at once, while in the original version 4 kids could play. Also the board was made much cheaper.

In Memory, the pictures were very cute and the kids loved playing with them.

Overall it was a fun afternoon, made possible by Houseparty.com!

Wordless Wednesday: Apple Pie

Made an apple pie from scratch on Monday for Bill and the kids. It was very yummy!

Chasing Hope by Kathryn Cushman (book review)

Chasing Hope

From the back cover:

A Touching Story of Two Unlikely Friends.
The Power of Trust.
The Struggle of Pain.
And How, Sometimes, Following God Can Lead You to the Most Unexpected Places.

A talented runner determined to make the Olympics, Sabrina Rice had her dreams shattered by a devastating diagnosis. One forfeited scholarship and several years later, she's forged a new vision for her future that has nothing to do with running, which she's buried deep, intent on forgetting...

Until the day she sees Brandy Philip running across the college campus, easily outpacing security. Sabrina immediately recognizes world class potential, and it's all the more painful that it belongs to a troublemaking teen. When a chance encounter brings the two young women together, Sabrina realizes she's Brandy's best hope to salvage a life about to spiral out of control forever.

My thoughts:

Chasing Hope by Kathryn Cushman kept me engaged not only in the entanglement of the lives of Sabrina and Brandy, but in their own personal struggles, as well as their needs for an outlet. I identified with both characters' struggles with God's plans for them and how accepting we are of God's plans versus our plans. I felt the story was very thought-provoking in that how do we accept God's plans for our lives versus how we think our lives should go?

As I have started training for a 5K race, I felt connected and interested in the running aspect of the story and feel that the author uses the running not only for the sport but also as a metaphor for our life. Are we running from life or what we are destined to do with our lives? Are we running toward or away from our calling?

Overall, I enjoyed this book tremendously and would recommend it to all.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book free from the publisher, Bethany House, in exchange for a honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Kickstand Books: A way to self publish your book! (guest post)

The following is a guest post by the folks at Handlebar publishers, as a introduction to their new project "Kickstand Books." Kickstand is a self-publishing service that handles all of an author's needs from A to Z. So if you have every considered becoming a published author, but wasn't sure how to go about it please read ahead!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You’ve got a book in you—you’re sure of it. Whether it’s an amazing story, or solid expert advice, you know others would benefit from the book you’re already writing in your head.

So, what is the best way for you to go about getting this book out to the masses? You’ve got a few options; we’ll walk you through them here.

Traditional Publishing

Getting your book published has never been tougher—if you go the traditional royalty publisher route. Traditional, or “royalty” publishing, works like this: you (or more accurately, your literary agent) queries a publishing company with a book proposal. If the publisher “buys” your book, they’ll offer you an advance (sometimes) and a small cut of the book sales proceeds. In return, they’ll edit the book, cover the costs of production (including the cover), printing, and so forth. But this also gives them editorial control and more sway in your brand management. The publisher handles distribution—getting your book into stores and online sellers—and book promotion, handling some marketing, but leaving a larger chunk to you than you might expect.

Self-Publishing

Self-publishing is a risk you, the author, take on in full. You can expect to pay all publishing costs: editing, design, printing, marketing, advertising and distribution. Because of this, you also have control of the product: you have final say on the cover, the content, and marketing plan. Once the expenses are paid, the author receives the profits from sales. The risk to you is greater, but so is the reward.

Self-publishing, as the name implies, can be a lonely job—you are on your own, often being funneled through a cookie-cutter type system. You’re doing it all by yourself. You’ll learn by making mistakes, and some of those “lessons” can be expensive. You may just want to write, but a self-published author also serves as business manager, brand manager, and more.

Self-Publishing with an Experienced Team

There is a third option in the new world of publishing: you can self-publish with a team.
Hiring a team of publishing professionals can make the self-publishing process much easier, less lonely, and increase the quality of your end product greatly.

You’ll also avoid costly mistakes by relying on the book professionals’ expertise. And you’ll be able to hand off much of the “book business” tasks so that you can focus on being an author—while still retaining control of content and the overall process.

Working with a self-publishing team like Kickstand Books is like hiring a personal concierge when exploring a new area. Having traveled this way before, this team can steer you in the right direction, help you make good choices, and take care of details that you, the author, might prefer not to handle. The team at Kickstand prides itself on the white glove service offered to each author, creating quality products every time including top design, printer negotiations, and more behind-the-scenes tasks most authors would prefer to leave to someone else.

Self-publishing can be a challenging yet gratifying option for authors, especially when they have a team of professionals working with them.

Right now I am::: Typing this post up, while an apple pie is baking in the oven.

Thinking:::that I haven't even made a dent in my to do list today.

On my reading pile:::The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks

On my TV:::Tonight it will be football

On the menu for this week:::Tonight it is Roast, potatoes, carrots and onions in the crock pot with crescent rolls and apple pie for dessert.

On my to do list:::Laundry, Laundry, and more laundry
Write out at least 2 book reviews and schedule to post
Go through the winter clothes of the kids and see what they need if anything.
Check winter coats, boots, etc. to see what is needed.
Make something with the pumpkin puree I found in the freezer.

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating:::I have a homemade apple pie in the oven.

Looking around the house:::There are toys everywhere...as all 3 kids have been home this morning (Rebecca is off school for the next 2 days). There is laundry to be folded on the dining table .Lunch dishes need to be put away. The kitchen needs cleaned up from my apple pie making.

From the camera:::

On my prayer list:::All people who are dealing with cancer in their lives.

Bible verse, Devotional:::

When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" (John 5:6)

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!
