Happy Thursday everyone! This morning we are relishing in the aftermath of Rebecca being confirmed in our church last night. In the Catholic Church, Confirmation is a Sacrament in which the kids receive the Holy Spirit and are fully initiated into the church. According to Catholic doctrine the sacrament can be administered from the age of reason up. Most Catholic Churches administer the Sacrament during the teen years, although some do earlier. In our church when kids are in the 7th and 8th grades they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our church celebrates Confirmation every 2 years, with the Bishop from Columbus coming to preside over the mass.
This year it was Rebecca's turn to receive it. She went through a year of learning in her PSR classes, attended a retreat and chose to be confirmed. Each child picks a Saint that they feel will be a part of them and represents them in some ways.
Rebecca chose Saint Dymphna, who is the patron Saint of those suffering from mental illness. When the Bishop was talking to Rebecca before the mass, he told her that those who chose St. Dymphna are usually some of the most compassionate people he has met. That is so true for Rebecca.

The mass was beautiful. It was packed with people, as there were 60 kids who were being confirmed. The kids being confirmed and their sponsors took up the first 1/3 of the church pews. We went super early and got one of the last sets of seats. The Bishop gave a wonderful homily and it was just a lovely mass all around.
Rebecca asked her grandfather, my dad, to be her Confirmation Sponsor. Sponsors are like godparents at Baptism, but this time they stand up for the person getting confirmed before the Bishop.

After the mass was over, my dad had to convince Rebecca to have her picture taken with the Bishop. She didn't really want to, but she did and I think she was glad after.
We also took several other photos after. Thankfully the rain we had earlier in the day had left and the sun was going down and it was perfect outside!
Overall, it was a very special night and we are super proud of her for taking this step. We love you Rebecca and welcome fully to the church!
Congratulations to Rebecca! Your dresses are so pretty.

DeleteCongratulations on Rebecca's confirmation. It's such a blessing. You both look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMy parents were both confirmation instructors. We're Anglican (Espiscopal. Think Queen of England, who is the head of the Anglican church). It's actually similar to the Catholic church.
Thank you Ms Goose!
