Overnight campout with AHG

Friday night, Rebecca and I packed up and headed out to a local farm where the owner was hosting our American Heritage Girls (AHG) troop for a campout. The farm had the perfect place for a campout. There was a large open area for tents, horse trails for a night hike, animals to have fun with (sheep, cows, and chickens).

Upon arrival, the girls had to pitch their tents and get their sleeping areas ready. Then the host had a priest from our parish say a blessing over the campsite and the girls. That was pretty nice. Then the girls had some free time to explore before time to make dinner.

For dinner, the girls made their own hobo packets to cook over the fire. There were hot dogs and veggies to add. They turned out pretty good.

After dinner, it was time to go on a night hike through the trails followed by s'mores making!

Surprisingly all the girls were in their tents and quiet by 10:30 that night. The leaders were able to sit around the fire and talk until close to 12:30AM.

The girls started getting up around 6:30 on Saturday morning. They had donuts, croissants and hard-boiled eggs for breakfast. Then they had to pack up their areas.

There was knot-tying practice.

Some of the older girls spent time teaching about camp-safety and a summary of the rules we had been following.

There was even a little lesson on edible plants---including jewel weed that was growing near the camping area.

Overall, it was a great experience that really connected the girls and leaders. I hope that we get to do more of these activities.

Happenings lately....

Let's see... other than yesterdays nature photo post, I haven't blogged since early last week. So let's see what has been going on around here....

The kids are enjoying school so far. Rebecca is being challenged and is getting used to changing classes, etc. The boys are doing well so far and seem to be getting back into the routine of school/homework.

I have been trying to walk the boys to school as often as possible. Last week we ended up walking to school 4 out of the 5 days. Several days we also walked the boys home. Part of that was because we didn't get my van back from the shop until Tuesday. (If you remember we had to have it towed when it wouldn't start last Thursday when Bill went to take Rebecca to school.) I got to invest in a brand new fuel pump for the van ($620 later!).

Bill worked a lot of evenings last week so we ended up walking together and doing errands together most of the week. We checked out a new store to us (Rural King) which just opened here in our town. We spent some time at the park sitting at one of the lakes. I went with Bill to a doctors appointment, where his doctor added another depression med to what he takes. We also checked out a couple of yard sales on Thursday.

He was with me when I hit a curb coming back from the yard sales and popped my tire! Thankfully, I was able to pull of into a parking lot and AAA came out and put my spare on. Bill took it to get new tires for the back... $200 later I should be good to go. However, I discovered that Firestone didn't put my spare back under the van so I have to figure that one out.

Like I said yesterday, Rebecca and I went on an overnight campout with her American Heritage Girls troop on Friday night/ Saturday morning (I will share more pics/stories tomorrow with that).

Yesterday, I went to mass with the kiddos and then I did some food prep (as I am going to go back to carb cycling), did some laundry, and rested.

Today, I have a lot I need to do...including mow grass, walk, exercise, more laundry, etc. It is never ending. LOL.

For now, I need to get the kids out the door to school and begin my day. What are you guys up to today?

Nature scenes this week...

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope that this post finds you all well. I am tired. It has been a long weekend. I had a camping overnight to do with Rebecca's AHG troop on Friday night/ Saturday morning and I am very tired today. I have been trying to get some things done, but I feel like I am dragging. So I am going to keep this to just nature photos from yesterday at the campout...

Hope everyone has a great week! If you would like to see some more nature photos, please feel free to check out my other nature posts:

Have a great Sunday and a great week!

Alien invasion

Have you heard? Apparently there is an alien running loose in my town. It was first reported in our local newspaper, right above the headline of a meth ring being shut down in our town. It has since been featured on news stations out of Columbus.

It is a fun diversion. Someone has created a Facebook page for the alien. They are using the page to also highlight local businesses that the alien is giving support to. (For example today, it was getting it's ship cleaned at a local car wash). A local fire department has made a video featuring it. It is all in good fun. A little lightheartedness in times that we need it.

Right now, I am just taking a moment of rest. I have had a long day so far. Got Rebecca up for school. I walked the boys to school. Did a 3 mile walk. Home to mow grass and cut down some weeds. Deep cleaned both bathrooms. Scrubbed litter boxes. Washed, dried, folded 3 loads of clothes including our bed sheets. Deep cleaned the dining room including my desk area.

I am tired. I need to go start dinner-- thankfully it is easy... pancakes, eggs and bacon. Hope everyone is having a good Monday. If you happen to see the alien, let me know!
