The Last of the Firedrakes by Farah Oomerbhoy

The Last of the Firedrakes

FROM THE BACK COVER:::

A fantastic adventure story that will transport you to a dazzling world of myth and magic.
16-year-old Aurora Darlington is an orphan. Mistreated by her adopted family and bullied at school, she dreams of running away and being free. But when she is kidnapped and dragged through a portal into a magical world, suddenly her old life doesn’t seem so bad.
Avalonia is a dangerous land ruled by powerful mages and a cruel, selfish queen who will do anything to control all seven kingdoms—including killing anyone who stands in her way.  Thrust headlong into this new, magical world, Aurora’s arrival sets plans in motion that threaten to destroy all she holds dear.
With the help of a young fae, a magical pegasus, and a handsome mage, Aurora journeys across Avalonia to learn the truth about her past and unleash the power within herself. Kingdoms collide as a complicated web of political intrigue and ancient magic lead Aurora to unravel a shocking secret that will change her life forever.

MY THOUGHTS:::

I really enjoyed The Last of the Firedrakes by Farah Oomerbhoy (This is book one of the Avalonia Chronicles). The cover image really drew me in and caught my interest. It is absolutely breathtaking!

While it is out of my comfort zone of what I typically read, I soon found myself entranced by the writing of Farah Oomerbhoy. The story of Aurora, who we can surmise is the last of the Firedrakes, is full of mystery, magic, fairies, mysterious creatures, and of course an evil leader (in this case Morgana who wants to rule all the kingdoms). Ms. Oomerbhoy's first book is full of plot twists and never holds a dull moment; in fact, the plot is constantly full of action and intrigue and there is never a moment of boredom.

The characters are well developed and their interactions with one another are well thought out. You can see the importance of all of the characters and their roles in the story without overshadowing one another. There is also the relationships that Aurora forms with those around her and which give and take as her own confidence and reality changes. I love seeing how Aurora's relationship with the Black Wolf evolves throughout this first story in the chronicles.

I can't wait to see how the story evolves even more throughout the next book in the series as this book left us with a pretty significant cliffhanger.

If there was any complaint in this book, it was the speed at which everything occurs. There were times where I got to the end of a chapter and I had to reread a little to make sure that I wasn't missing some of the action and so that I could put it all in perspective as part of the whole story. I don't see this as a huge problem though as the speed also lends itself to keeping my interest.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book!
